How to Store Your Model Steam Engines the Right Way

Usually, when people assemble model steam engines, they think that they’re just going to leave it out in the open. They think that the engine looks good as it is and people would probably want to talk about it. In other words, they look at the model steam engine as a conversation piece or even as a work of art and leave it out in the open.

This is all well and good, but as you probably already know, unless you live in a mansion, space is going to be at a premium. It may not be apparent at first. Maybe at first you have more than enough space, but as your place picks up clutter, or when people move in, or you end up simply being too busy, that best model steam engine that used to look so good in your living room starts looking like a liability. That’s right. It starts sticking out and soon enough, it starts looking out of place.

Well, don’t feel too bad. You are hardly alone. This happens quite a bit to a lot of people because what they do is they get excited about putting together a model and after they have assembled the model they forget that the model is actually part of an inner space. In other words, they forget the context of a particular item and they are at a loss as to what to do with that item.

Well, while it’s anybody’s guess what you would eventually decide as far as how to show off the model steam engines that you have managed to assemble, one thing is clear, you are going to have to store them. Now, this is where things get a little bit dicey. You can’t just cut corners and focus on your comfort and convenience and store away this type of property in a sloppy way.

Well, you can do that, but I can guarantee you that the value of your property would probably go down. Why? Model steam engines have many sensitive parts. They really can’t take that much punishment.

If you leave them out in the open and your cat tips them over, that can be a headache. Similarly, if you have a small child in the house and the kid knocks over the item, you might be out a few bucks in terms of replacement parts. In fact, in many cases, you really don’t even have replacement options.

I hope you can see the stakes involved here. Storage is crucial. So wrap your mind around the following storage tips to ensure that you put away your model steam engines the right way.

Disassembly Versus Assembly

It’s really important from the get go to decide whether you’re going to disassemble the model steam engine to put it away or not. This is a big decision because it impacts how much storage space you will need.

Obviously, if something is assembled, it’s going to take up more space than if it was split up into many different compact parts and then packed into a compact container. This is a no-brainer. However, it’s a no-brainer in terms of comparison, but it’s not a no-brainer in terms of your actual decision.

Are you sure you want the steam engine in one piece or would you be better off if you were to disassemble it and then put it into a compact container with a small footprint? This way, you can store more stuff and the model won’t stick out.

Unfortunately, there’s no easy answer to this. Everybody’s different. Everybody’s situation is different. Only you are most aware of your particular resources as well as available space. You have to answer this yourself. Does it make better sense to disassemble the item or keep it the way it is and just find the right space for it?

Proper Placement

Keep in mind that even if you store something away, it is very likely that something will knock it over. It’s very likely that something that you stored it next to would tip over and possibly damage that item.

This happens all the time and, unfortunately, few people think this far ahead. They just focus on the relief that they got when they stored away the item that has become an eyesore. They see an item that’s sticking out like a sore thumb, and they feel really relieved that they finally found the space and the time to pack that item so it’s out of sight.

Well, just because something is out of sight doesn’t automatically mean that it’s out of mind. You also have to make sure that no item would fall over your stored model steam engines. If they get hit hard enough, you might have to replace them. Talk about a headache.

Do yourself a big favor and reconsider whether it makes better sense to just disassemble your model steam engines prior to storing them.
